For a government which came to power with an unbelievable mandate in 2014, it is difficult counting its achievements after four and a half years of its unbridled rule.
It would not be out of context to say that the Modi government squandered away the trust of its people with its wild schemes and cockamamie ideas.
What’s wrong with Modi Sarkar
Everyday a new issue is highlighted by the media which has virtually changed our drawing rooms into think tanks, evaluating the pros and cons of the Modi dispensation.
However, even after turning the debate religiously vitriolic and caustic with a mention of Rafale jet deal here and there, the point of departure for the upcoming general elections will be one and only one – the unforgiving lynching of the Indian economy.
How seriously did you notice that all these months, whilst we remained glued to the TV sets watching news like mob lynching, CBI, RBI or Sabrimala, something more sinister happened – India’s growth story went off-track!
An intimidated and repressed media crawled in the durbar doing what it does best, deflecting news. Media destroyed its own credibility by not reporting what went wrong on the ground.
Claimed achievements versus reality
In the run up to the 2019 general elections, one can see everything that went wrong in 2016-17; Demonetization and a fumbled implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST).
A combination of these two atrocities resulted in a spiral of events which created a socio-economic unrest like situation in India.
Declaring 85 per cent of legal tender as illegal was not Demonetization. Actually, it was demonization of rationalization and total loss of respect for country’s hardworking population.
Mind you, this affected majority isn’t that one per cent which holds 53 per cent of India’s assets but it’s the class of people who work and earn their bread and butter daily.
With a stroke of a wand, 85 per cent of the legal tender was gone and so disappeared the working class’ dreams, aspirations and dignity.
GST was the requirement of modern India making her a common market. But the moment was lost when reform implementation became event management by the government which wants to prove a point every time, even without any such need.
Announcements are more fake news
For the past four years and half, Indians have heard announcements after announcements which lead to nowhere.
In these decorative declarations, the Bhartiya Janta Party-led government actually forgot to attend to the mundane day-to-day tasks. Take for example the railways whose modernization was skipped for bullet train which too hasn’t seen much light of the day until now.
The government also seems to have further created a fear psychosis in investors due to unpredictable policies and withering stability which are further driving them away.
Pick whatever controversy you want, 2019 is game Indian economy.
